My Opinion on Animation Movie: The Willoughbys (2020) [Eng]

Hello guys.

Welcome back to my blog post. Thanks for reading my blog.

In this post, I want to review and give some opinion about this animation movie that I just watch which is The Willoughbys, release on 22nd April 2020 on Netflix.

As usual, I always watch movies with my housemate. And I told them that my brain was tired from watching thriller and horror movies, and I decided to watch this movie because I want my brain to rest!

But I only watch this movie with my one housemate, because we share same interest, which is “animation movie.”

We choose to watch this movie because when I open Netflix on my browser, the movie show their trailer and I’m interested, so I just click it.

I didn’t know that I watch it on their initial release.

Okay, let’s start with the Movie Information.

Movie Information
  • Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Kids & Family
  • Director: Kris Pearn
  • Writer: Lois Lowry, Kris Pearn, Mark Stanleigh
  • Duration: 1 hour 30 minute
  • Country: USA

The story tells about 4 siblings, which their parents don’t care much about them. When they can’t stand it because they are being bullied by their own parents, and they believe they can be independent, they plan to send their parents on vacation/travel to dangerous places that are likely to die. The 4 siblings then searched for the meaning of “family” in their own way.

Review on Rotten Tomatoes

It’s a sweet and thoughtful think it’s a pretty funny movie. The animation looks pleasing and I do love the story and the characters (except those parents at least). A fun movie and I would definitely recommend it 🙂 – Adriana R

Expected a little bit more after seeing the rating. Animation is good I just expected a bit more character. Overall though, great film with a very creative plot remenicent of Lemony Snicket with Willy Wonka vibes. – Blake S

Review on IMDb

A mix of ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ and ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and ‘Mary Poppins’? Darker and pretty disturbing than most family fare but still has its moments especially with its beautiful animation style and great voice acting. – Sir_AmirSyarif

My 3yo, 5yo, and I adore this film. Several moments that made us laugh hysterically, most of those moments are kind of dark. So if you and your family like twisted humor, give this one a go! – akiraer

My review and opinion

Parents need to know that The Willoughbys is an unconventional animated film based on the same-named book made by Lois Lowry. It tells the tale of a family of neglected children as they “orphan” themselves intentionally from their selfish parents and embark on a life-affirming adventure.

The story has dark elements (the parents are funny but implacably mean and negligent) that are lightened by the bright, upbeat and clever execution of the film.

Comic pratfalls (tumbles, narrow escapes, crashes, a booby-caught house) and slightly suspenseful scenes (a few moments of shiver in a snowstorm) are frequent but farcical.

The children “imagine” their parents at various life-threatening moments (e.g., sharks, bears). There are a few pee jokes, as well.

The film is best for children who are comfortable with real vs. imaginary violence and who won’t be distressed when they watch a comically loathsome mom and dad mistreat their very resilient children.

Want to watch this movie? Or want to suggest to others about this movie? As usual, you can watch this movie on Netflix.
